Parametric Hospital
A necessity. A challenge. A reality.
Aware of particular growing populations in great need of a healthcare network with a coherent, efficient and quality infrastructure, we’ve asked ourselves the following question:
Is it possible to design, build and equip a hospital in just one year? Can we conceive a hospital model capable of adapting to every reality?
[yes]
The Parametric Hospital is the result of a process based on an in-depth analysis of the metrics and parameters that define complex healthcare facilities, such as hospitals: the circulation, metrics of the layout and spaces, modulation of the façades, strategies for possible extensions, prioritisation of accesses, facility installations, etc.
It is an architectural product with a high degree of prefabrication that allows all the processes to overlap and be optimised, reducing the hospital’s delivery time to a record less than a year.
See the infographic comparing the construction of a conventional hospital and a parametric hospital.
First step: We asked ourselves: How can we build 3 times faster, but with the characteristics of a conventional project, i.e. with a tailor-made design for each case, and with quality buildings that will last over time?
Second step: Looking for answers. After a long process of trial and error, we realised that in order to design tailor-made hospitals it was not necessary to generate as many models as possible, but rather to be able to conceive a single model that would adapt to all designs.
Third step: Establishing a set of rules, metrics and strategies common in all healthcare facilities to guarantee their proper functions, whatever the final characteristics are. These parameters should also allow customisation of the building from the outset, as well as it being adaptable to future changes.
The metaphor that best explains the strategy is the comparison between an open ended spanner and an adjustable spanner used in mechanics: The Parametric Hospital aims to be a tool like the adjustable spanner, capable of adapting to any metric, instead of having to use a specific tool tailored to each situation.
The Parametric Hospital is an official patent of PMMT and Makiber S.A. granted in 2016 by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, which consolidates it as a model of innovation in healthcare architecture.
Advantages in design and construction:
- State-of-the-art hospital centre
- Maximum flexibility: adaptable to diverse contexts and future changes
- Built with local technicians/techniques in record time
- With options of customisation from the very beginning, a highly energy efficient (lighting and air conditioning) hospital
Benefits to the citizens’ quality of life:
- Closer medical care
- Increased specialised medical care
- Increased number of professionals
- Decreased waiting time
- Highly comfortable environment
