Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem
A wayfinding system for all.
The Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem is an accessible wayfinding system, designed to bring the building closer to everyone. Conceived from the perspective of universal accessibility, it simply displays all the information necessary for anyone to independently navigate around the building.
In different languages, Braille and with a tactile map, it allows users to easily identify the different spaces and distinguish the main features of the building: it locates and orientates the entrances, receptions and floor access points inside the building.
The Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem is a product designed by PMMT based on the Clear Code Architecture® criteria, the first method that objectively guarantees the universal accessibility of any built environment. The totem is based on a universal design to meet the needs of people with functional diversity, but anyone can directly benefit from the usefulness of the Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem.
Good design achieves a product that goes beyond its original purpose, with an attractive and useful result for everyone. It gives the users their location, identifies the spaces, and displays the building's characteristics and recognisable features: all without sacrificing aesthetics.
UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE. The Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem is a key element of a space's signage project, helping to build inclusive buildings that are truly for everyone: buildings where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can access and move around as independently as possible.
MULTIFUNCTION. The wayfinding totem not only helps users to easily identify the different spaces, but also incorporates an explanation of the building's main features and recognisable landmarks.
MULTILINGUAL. To make it easier for anyone to understand, the information is presented simply in three languages, as well as Braille. ADAPTABLE. The dimensions and shape are variable so it can adapt to the space accordingly; however, the content always provides relevant information about the space and is structured in the same way. Graphically, the wayfinding system is always coherent with the rest of the building's signage elements, blending in with the corporate image and the aesthetics of the space.
The Clear Code® Wayfinding Totem has an overall dimension of 2450mm x 550mm x 320mm. Its rectangular base provides balance to the structure and acts as a plan projection of the geometry of the wayfinding totem: it makes itself recognisable for people with visual impairment, allowing the user to locate it with the help of a cane, and avoiding collisions. The tactile pavement helps visually impaired users to locate the totem, acting as an important part of the wayfinding system.
The central element of the wayfinding system is the representation of the space’s floor plan with its main features drawn with importance. The spaces are marked with icons and numbered in Braille with an explanatory caption at the bottom.
