Joan XXIII Hospital
Tarragona (Spain)
The proposal for the refurbishment and extension of the Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona is based on the idea that the correct choice of the typological and functional model will define the efficiency, functionality, connectivity, flexibility and expansion capacity of the hospital for the rest of its lifespan. A compact proposal that blends in with the existing buildings, optimising circulation and avoiding the crossing of public and technical circulations, while at the same time being flexible enough to adapt to possible changes and allow for future extensions.
A volume that adapts is the response to the requirements of the city and of the hospital. The extension fits in with the programme and its dimensions, integrating itself into the existing building without altering its functionality: in so doing, the efficient organisation of the phases makes it possible to add services without losing any of them at any time, while at the end of each phase the hospital always has a definitive image and not a provisional one.
In addition, the project draws on the methodologies developed by PMMT's Innovation Department in order to achieve a hospital that is universally accessible, healthy for everyone, sustainable and efficient.
