Manta General Hospital
Manta (Ecuador)
The 24,100 m2 Manta General Hospital posed a challenge for us to build. A facility of this size with anti-seismic design parameters of 'zero damage' in the event of an earthquake. In a society such as Ecuador's, which is particularly sensitive to this issue due to the earthquake of early 2016 that heavily damaged the country, building under these parameters became essential. The success of the parameterised models developed and the previous experiences exposed have allowed us to adapt the solutions adopted to achieve a building that, in the event of a grade 9 earthquake, neither the structure nor the enclosures would become unstable or cause physical damage to its occupants. The designs of the different systems have been based on the idea of allowing xyz movements of the enclosures and dividing elements by using articulated and 'coliso' joints.
