TERRITORIAL UNIT OF THE SARRIÀ-SANT GERVASI GUÀRDIA URBANA
BARCELONA (SPAIN)
The project for the new Territorial Unit of the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi Guàrdia Urbana, winner of the competition organized by the Barcelona City Council, is located at a meeting point between the metropolitan area (Ronda de Dalt in Barcelona) and the neighborhood (Avinguda Foix). It serves as a boundary between two distinct urban contexts, starting from a compact volumetric design that gradually opens up at the northern corner to harmonize with its surroundings.
Our main challenge was to find a balance between opacity and permeability in the transition from interior to exterior spaces. Opacity was essential in this project to meet the privacy and security requirements of these institutions, while permeability was equally necessary for environmental reasons and to create comfortable workspaces for all staff.
This approach was materialized through the building's volumetric design, the definition of its facades, and the creation of two courtyards shielded from the urban surroundings. These courtyards not only act as filters between the exterior and interior, but also stimulate cross-ventilation, which helps reduce the building's energy consumption.
