NEW UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL COMPLEX OF A CORUÑA
A CORUÑA (Spain)
The extension of the University Hospital of A Coruña, as outlined in the competition, is almost 150,000 m2. The proposal was a building that blends into its surroundings, embracing the existing building without depriving it of light or views, and organised in two parts: a low, compact volume and two towers that rest on it, as if it were a plinth. The two towers are presented as a new urban landmark for the facility, while the composition lightens the general perception of the built volume.
The arrangement of the low building with respect to the topography of the surroundings enhances the views towards the estuary, while the two towers, separated from each other, have 360º views. In addition, the south-facing courtyards help to organise the building, incorporate vegetation and guarantee the natural lighting and ventilation of all the hospital's spaces.
