UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY CONSULTANCY FOR MAIN ROADS IN BARCELONA
Barcelona (Spain)
In 2015, using the Clear Code Architecture® method, we evaluated the level of universal accessibility of Paseo de Gracia, Paseo San Juan and Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona, with the aim of checking whether the newly implemented urban designs had taken into account the needs of all people. The analysis of these three main roads was one of the first carried out by the PMMT Arquitectura team, using the Clear Code software designed for this purpose.
In each of the visits to the three main roads, the traffic lanes for pedestrians, the crossings between road and pedestrian traffic, pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes and urban squares were analysed. A wide range of data was collected, related to the location and morphology of street furniture; the characteristics of urban elements such as trees, fountains, benches and bus shelters; the dimensions and characteristics of different traffic lanes, the signage system in the streets, among other aspects. Subsequently, the level of universal accessibility of each of the elements that make up the design of each street was evaluated for each of the CCA Groups, producing a detailed report on the strong points, points for improvement and actions to be implemented to increase the level of partial and global accessibility.
In a second phase, a graphic proposal was made for each street modifying the original design, with the aim of achieving a higher level of universal accessibility.
