Barcelona Public Health Agency
Barcelona (Spain)
The aim of the building was to unify the different departments and services of the Barcelona Public Health Agency that were located in different buildings in the city.
The building was fragmented into 3 volumes linked by an external grid, achieving two interpretations: that of a single representative building and at the same time that of 3 independent buildings on a smaller scale;
A permeable plinth with a large opening connects the Paseo de la Vall d'Hebron with the future green viewpoint of La Teixonera. Thanks to the transparency of the ground floor façade, a great visual connection is achieved between the street and the park. The office and laboratory plan is placed in 2 volumes resting on a green cushion.
The vegetation between the volumes provides quality outdoor areas for the users of the building and generates an image representative of the values of sustainability and healthy environments promoted by the Agency. An optimal proportion of office and laboratory volumes was achieved, responding to the natural light requirements of the plan (offices 80% natural light, laboratories 60%).
This optimised the façade’s cost and reduced energy consumption in air conditioning. All the departments have a direct relationship with outdoor spaces; terraces with vegetation and panoramic views of the city.
The building was designed to be built in two phases (first office phase and second laboratory phase) on separate floors, without the need to build on top of the first phase of construction. With this approach, it would be possible to extend the building at any time without affecting the functioning of the building.
