LM16-HOUSE
GIRONA (Spain)
Located at the end of a development of detached houses in Baix Empordà, the LM16 House is designed to meet the demands of the resident family and the characteristics and location of the plot on which it stands, which has a panoramic view of nearby agricultural fields and, in the background view of the Montgrí, Canigó and Pyrenees
The single-family house with an L-shaped floor plan and two storeys is designed to protect itself from the prevailing Tramontana and Garbí winds, while at the same time closing off the views of the adjoining residential properties and orienting itself towards the Empordà landscape. To achieve this, the more open-plan rooms for daytime use are located on the façade that leads to the garden and views, while the opposite façade, closer to the boundary of the plot, features the more compartmentalised and opaque rooms for night-time use and the service rooms that are more closed off from the neighbours.
The orientation of the house and the layout of the openings and courtyards, apart from offering a diversity of uses depending on the time of year, favours the spatial quality of the rooms and provides a good bioclimatic effect to the complex. Among other strategies, the configuration of the house opens up to the constant light from the north, allowing east to west cross ventilation, filtering the intense sunlight from the west in summer and protecting it from the intense and bothersome winds.
The composition of the façade combines handmade ceramics, wood, concrete and glass. Taking advantage of the texture of each material and of its rigging, an exterior envelope is configured with textures that harmonise with those of the agricultural environment.
