Residential Care Home and Day Centre in Molins de Rei
Barcelona (Spain)
The project consists of a building that houses a care home for the elderly with 102 beds, a day centre and a car park for public use. The building is adapted to the site to make the most of the natural light and blend into the surroundings. The garden connects with both the school next door and the Rambla, integrating the building into the urban fabric. The best orientation (south) is sought for all the activity areas, which in turn overlook the garden.
The proposal is organised with two living units per floor with a single central control. This allows the same staff to generate two living rooms of more domestic dimensions, quieter as there are fewer people and the interior corridors shorten their distances. The privacy of all the rooms is preserved, preventing them from facing each other and with views of green areas, the garden and the stream.
The façades are designed with a rhythm of windows typical of a residential building to avoid the image of an institution. The shape and distribution of the floor plan is designed to be expanded as needed, without affecting the operation of the centre. The project is designed to focus on its users, with a high degree of humanisation in the spaces. For example, the windows in the rooms and the corridor allow users to adapt these spaces and experience them differently, empowering them and making these spaces more their own.
