Restoration of a country house in Empordà
Empordà (Spain)
The project consists of the refurbishment and extension of an old farmhouse as a single-family home in Baix Empordà.
The house is located to the west of a large plot of land near a secondary road which the house has access to and surrounded by greenery which protects it from the prevailing winds in the area.
The renovation work focuses on the east façade of the farmhouse. It involves an extension in an eastward direction that allows the creation of generous and well-oriented spaces where the living, dining and kitchen areas are located on the ground floor and the main rooms on the first floor. The other intervention affects one of the central load-bearing walls which is eliminated and becomes part of the transparent enclosure of the central courtyard that illuminates the interior of the house.
The dining room and kitchen area on the east façade is protected from radiation by the formation of a covered outdoor space forming a shaded and cool porch that is used in summer as an outdoor dining area. This porch formally continues harmoniously with the slopes of the existing roofs using the same ceramic tile. The living area, which is lower in height, is protected by a pergola of wooden slats supported by concrete beams of triangular geometry whose slopes join the different heights of the roofs to generate a more translucent space with a geometry that opens up to the landscape.
