RISE Center
Sant Boi de Llobregat (Spain)
The rehabilitation of the Dr. Pujadas Building, constructed in the 1970s and located in the Sant Joan de Déu Health Park in Sant Boi de Llobregat, aims to establish the new Centre de Recerca i Innovació en Salut Emocional del Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu (RISE Center). This center seeks to promote research in mental health to generate a positive impact on society, fostering collaboration and innovation among interdisciplinary groups and other organizations related to emotional health. In line with the center’s vision of advancing knowledge in this field, the design of the new building is based on three strategic lines:
1- Functional and welcoming environment for research and teaching: The building design follows criteria of flexibility, humanization, health, and accessibility, ensuring that the interior spaces are comfortable, adaptable, and respectful of users' well-being. Universal accessibility is guaranteed through the Clear Code Architecture® method and the quality of the indoor environment by prioritizing healthy materials Friendly Materials®.
2- Integration into the environment with an innovative image: The building is intended to harmonize with its surroundings and reflect its purpose, as well as to generate a new focal point of activity and relationships that enrich the health activities of the Park. The Flexbrick facade cladding is chosen to provide a uniform and innovative image to the building. Additionally, the original volume of the building is modified to create a terrace and an atrium that facilitate interaction among people, as well as internal circulation and orientation.
3- Focus on bioclimatic behavior, environmental comfort, and structural adequacy: Given that the original building was constructed in the 1970s, the structure is being modified to adapt the space to new uses and their respective loads. The building envelope is also being improved to enhance the building’s bioclimatic performance, reduce energy consumption, and increase thermal and acoustic comfort for users in the interior spaces.
The architectural design of the center aligns with its activities of research and innovation in emotional health. The building aims to become a valuable component of the mental health ecosystem, creating an environment that fosters experiences consistent with the values and philosophy of the RISE Center.
