UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY CONSULTANCY FOR THE NEW CAMP NOU
Barcelona (Spain)
The remodelling of the Camp Nou stadium is the work of NIKKEN SEKKEI, Pascual-Ausió Arquitectes and b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos. With the aim of making the new stadium accessible to all fans, the drafting team decided to incorporate the parameters of universal accessibility set by the Clear Code Architecture® method into the original design.
In order for the new stadium to be free of physical and communication barriers, a team of PMMT universal accessibility specialists analysed and evaluated the level of universal accessibility of every space that makes up the facility at each stage of the project. At the end of each phase, PMMT proposed prioritised measures of improvement, in addition to providing continuous support to the drafting team in the decision-making process. Some of the inclusive improvements included the design of accessible itineraries, the implementation of reserved seating for users with any type of disability and their companions, the installation of a magnetic loop system in various rooms and the implementation of adapted service desks.
In conjunction with this consultancy, PMMT developed the Stadium Signage and Wayfinding Project, with the aim of guaranteeing that everyone can find their way around and locate the spaces inside the stadium as independently as possible. Based on a universal visual and communicative code, the signage system generates optimal traffic flows from the outside to the inside of the stadium. The information is easy to understand, concise and structured on three levels: informative, directional and situational. Some of the universal design criteria applied in the project are the implementation of raised-relief location maps; use of several languages including Braille; use of macro-characters and easy-to-read typography and pictograms; the use of colour contrasts; use of different font sizes depending on the type of sign and its function... amongst others.
