I-COVID HOSPITAL SYSTEM, S/SALUT RESPIRA
In the context of the pandemic in April 2020 and thanks to a joint research process with the Catalan Health System and other organisations, the S/Salut Respira project was created. It is designed to be a monographic hospital for Covid pathology, centralised and unique in Catalonia, with a capacity of 768 ICU beds and which can be built in 7-10 weeks next to the Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge. The main characteristics of the building are:
- To support and restore the health system in the face of possible outbreaks of Covid and other contingencies. .
- It's scalable, given its modular configuration. It can be built for a variable capacity of between 384 and 1680 beds.
- It's safe and efficient. The architectural design minimises the number of professionals required for patient care. Also, the distribution of the circuits and transfer spaces ensures minimum risk of contagion of healthcare personnel.
- It's flexible in management, since the basic unit of 48 patients can be divided into patient bubbles of varying severity with the Covid and isolated people.
- It is multi-purpose so that, once the epidemic is over, the building can be reconverted for other uses.
The S/Salut Respira hospital was never built due to the complexity of managing a building of this size. However, the project is the seed for the development of the hospital typologies I-COVID HOSPITAL and for the materialisation of the Multipurpose Hospital Buildings in the Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili in Barcelona and in the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova in Lleida.
